Activision threatens to pull support for PS3 – The world yawns unanimously
Posted By: R.James

Let me start this post off by saying one important thing: I will play any title that I think is going to be worth playing, regardless of publisher. That being said, Activision is really starting to get on my $hit list.
First off, realize that what Activision is proposing is in no way going to happen. The short answer is simple: cutting off PS3 support would surely cut into Activision’s sales (even if the PS3 has a smaller install base). Sure, Activision may be putting on it’s best “argh” face and acting all big and bad. But here’s the thing: more eyes on a game equals more eyes on a game. And while the PS3 is not putting up wii numbers (it’s been in last place since its launch in 2006) according to last month’s NPDs the PS3 sold only 20,000 units less than the 360. On top of that, the ps3 is only 350,000 units behind the 360 in total sales for 2009. The damn thing is selling.
Yes, it’s hard to believe, but, the system is selling to people living in the U.S. (y’know, that country currently going through the worst recession in decades). These gamers want to play Activision games, even though Activision is starting to act like the rich step-dad who kicks his children, cheats on his wife, and is only home 3 days a week. Yes, yes, we all know the PS3 needs to make a price cut. Sony is so tired of hearing it they’re probably holding back on the price cut just to shut us all up! But for Activision to actually go through with this and cut all production of any and all titles forthcoming on the system?
No way. Not a chance in hell. Sorry, I’m not buying it. There are plenty of people who have a PS3 (perhaps only a PS3) and want to play Activision games. More consoles means more people who get their hands on the games they want on the platform they want it on. That is a scenario that is bad for no one. At the end of the day, Activision is playing chicken with Sony: who will buckle first. Honestly, I don’t think Activision will do anything expect watch…and wait…
…which is pretty much what we were doing before Activision decided to play this Ace (though it smells a lot more like a joker).
