Eve Online ‘Butterfly Effect’ Trailer

For those who frequent the MMO ‘space’, EvE Online has always been known as a game who’s impenetrable starting game is only surpassed by it’s equally impenetrable and viciously protected end game realm known as ‘low-sec’ or 0.0 space. Out here, you make your own rules, your own laws, and your own choices. Alliances of thousands of ships in a constant struggle to protect their turf and make boat loads of cash to support their large player owned stations, battleships, and production lines. In some ways, Eve is the “wild wild west” of MMOs. The frontier is out there and you and your gang, corporation, alliance can lay claim to it, but you’re going to have to fight to keep it. However, this incredible sense of freedom has always come at a high price: days, weeks, even months of learning skills one at a time, a regular repeating pattern of moons, stars, and asteroids that don’t actually exist, battles that boil down to who’s spreadsheet is stacked higher with skills than the other, and players who have been playing so long that they are, essentially, the lone wolves with no equal.
CCP’s latest trailer, ‘the butterfly effect’, wants you to see the best parts of what Eve has to offer. Personally, I think it’s the best trailer the company has ever made to sell the game. Unlike previous trailers filled with lots of pretty visuals and not much else, this trailer explains (quite well in fact) how having one, seamless world allows for the actions of each player to reverberate across the entirety of Eve.
While CCP’s attempts to draw in new players are admirable, there are still plenty of players who will never dive in longer than the 14-day trial. If only because of videos like this (see above).
