Tekken the movie – made for mediocrity

There has only ever been one movie based off of a fighting game that didn’t totally suck (and if you say Street Fighter, I’ll throttle you). That movie was Mortal Kombat. Sure, it was campy as all hell, but it was a fun flick that totally caught the ridiculous nature of a game where people fight a four-armed, seven-foot tall monstrosity for the fate of the world. Tekken, on the other hand, seems hell bent on making itself more hated than any other video game inspired fighting films ever made. That takes some serious effort. Not only have they secured no one of interest to “act” in the film, they’ve gone out of their way to make the story cliche, the color palette garish, the fighting environments bland, and the fights totally uninspired.

Okay, maybe that’s harsh.  It certainly doesn’t look as bad as last year’s The Legend of Chun Li.  But seriously, this is a movie about fighting, could you guys try and make it a little more interesting, cause…uh…Tony Jaa and Jet Li this is not.

Sure, they’ve stuff a lot of the characters from the games in here: favorite Eddy Gordo is positioned front and center, Kazuya is the token bad guy, and Jun Kazama’s son ‘Jin’ is some silly “chosen one” or something. It all doesn’t make much sense. Then again, neither does making a Tekken movie. I guess Hollywood will never learn.
