Discussion Topic: The ever evolving ‘Unreal’ engine
Posted By: Rob James
For episode 32 of GameCrashers, we’ve decided to talk about one of the mainstays of gaming in the current era: the Unreal Engine. It’s been used in, literally, hundreds of games. And through its 3-plus iterations and heavy modifications it’s always looked better and better as more companies used it. However, it’s not the only kid on the block. It’s had to stay competitive along side old faithfuls like the id Tech and Source engines as well as new players like the CryEngine, Rockstar’s RAGE engine (currently powering Red Dead Redemption), and GSC Game World’s Xray Engine (currently powering S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat). Additionally, with so many games using this one engine, no matter how much they modify it, an Unreal powered game isn’t hard to spot. But there’s one thing no one can deny: the Unreal engine has played a huge part in the evolution of gaming.
So, what are your thoughts on Unreal and it’s place in video game history? Leave us a comment here or send us an email at theblog@gamecrashers.net about your experiences with Unreal powered games, the engine, or anything else you want to talk about. Check back Tuesday night to see how the podcast turned out!.

I have always been a fan of the Unreal Engine and EPIC games. Anytime I throw in UT3 or GoW2, I am still amazed how great they look. Still some of the best looking games on consoles.
Mmmm who does like that freshly vasolined look… hahah ok ok i guess its improved more than that but…
To be honest i never liked any of the unreal games, at all… then again i guess i never paid attention to what engine the game is using.
I personally like the Source Engine myself. Then again i like alot of the games on that engine :b
