E3 Interview: Sonic 4 Episode 1

We’ve all been wanting it, ever since Sonic went to 3-D on the Dreamcast. I actually liked Sonic Adventure, but there has yet to be a 3-D iteration to really capture the joy of playing a side scrolling Sonic game. Well, at E3 I got to not only play (terribly for that matter) the newest Sonic side scroller, but I got to interview the Brand Manager, Ken Balough. Needless to say, he’s far better at the game than I am.

The game looks like an updated version of the old games, 3-D modeled characters on a 3-D HD background with the same type of music that we associate with Sonic. It looks beautiful. The game plays very true to its predecessors; run, charge spin. The only real difference seems to be the homing attack with targeting reticule. It’s not something the player is forced to use, but it’s still a visual departure from the original. I think it helps to speed up the game, though it does take some getting used to. I think getting used to it was the reason I was dying so much honestly, but I’m still looking forward to buying the game when it’s released later this year.
