Pre-PAX Prime Perceptions – 2010
I have arrived in Seattle Washington, PAX one day away. Normally we try to get everyone in the crew together for these events, but this time around, I am the only member of the GameCrashers family in attendance. I can already tell this is going to go flawlessly… For E3 we had two editors and a camera man to help capture all the action. This time around it’s just me and a voice recorder. First thing’s first though, getting there.
The flight out here placed me literally one seat away from the Associate Producer for Epic Mickey. We got to talking and he allowed me to take the very first photograph of Epic Mickey’s PAX presence! Exclusive photo, seen only here at GameCrashers. Enjoy:
Exciting stuff, I know. And by the time I got to the terminal, the number of Epic Mickey Associate Producers had doubled. Can’t wait to see what they have planned for the show.
I’ll be honest though, it is very daunting to try to do coverage of the show completely by myself. I understand now more than ever the importance of having good co-horts to help me fill in the blanks of my gaming knowledge during interviews. I’m concerned I may miss something important along the way. I’m looking forward to the days ahead, but I know that there will be much work to be done each and every night. Any good omens I can get for the time being will be for the best.
After unpacking my things in room 911 (not a joke), and after a brief pause trying to figure out how this building remains standing, I walked to the convention center.
The main entrance is a narrow canyon, soon to be booming with gamers, cosplayers and developers alike. Lower floors are dedicated to table top games and theatres, higher floors to PC gaming and more table top and more theatres, but the 4th floor is the biggest nugget of the show for me, the exhibition hall. This is where all the latest and greatest of the video gaming spectrum come out to play. This is where I go to get my media badge, only to be turned away because the media will call is in the hotel across the street.
Ok, so good start. I have the room number of an emergency code and horrible date of tragedy, a building likely to topple onto my hotel, no idea where I’m going, and I’m alone. I step back out into the sunlight and see Jerry Holkins, the writer and co-founder of Penny-Arcade, carrying what looks to be a purple suit jacket big enough for a ventriloquist’s dummy, walking to the door I’m exiting.
I smile and say “Looking forward to tomorrow.” He looks at me and says “Yea, I can’t wait!” And you know what? Yes. It’s going to be a great PAX. I’m honored to be here covering the event on the behalf of anyone that can’t be here over the weekend, readers and GameCrashers staff alike. I’m going to get a lot of swag for you guys and I’m going to line up as many developer interviews as I can for future podcasts. I do this because you guys rock and I want to give you the GameCrashers PAX perspective. Now where are my car keys?
