GameCrashers 2nd Annual GotY Crashstravaganza
Another year has come and gone, so it is time for us to break out the Special Reserve, don our headsets, and beat the #&@^ out of each other as we decide which games from 2010 deserve all the credit and which ones deserve all the scorn.
This show was streamed live in front of a Ustream audience (1/8/11)
The Rundown:
- The Rules
- The Best of the Best
- The Honorary Awards
- The Dubious Awards
- GAME OF THE YEAR!!
- The Unusual Awards
- 2011 predictions
Note: due to technical difficulties and my incredible knack at ripping the power strip out of the wall, one category from the list did not make the final recording (Best New Main Character). On the plus side, I think we’ve just about had all the snafus we need for a full year…yep.
Please subscribe on iTunes, follow us on Twitter, and check us out on Facebook. Be sure to check out all the other network podcasts at VGEVO.com.
Thanks to everyone who came out for the live show. And no, the duration of the podcast is not a typo. Enjoy!

Could you guys discuss about underrated, “unknown” games?
im talking about games like grim fandango, psychonauts or indigo prophecy.
ive bought psychonauts and beyond good and evil because of you guys.
cheers, thanks for such a great podcast.
Hola Disparanoia,
We fit those things in when we can (I’m kicking around doing a weekly column regarding lesser known games). In the meantime, you should check out Racketboy. He’s a good guy and his whole site is basically dedicated to lesser known games from the PS2 going backwards.
Its the great Sean Marks!
Please forgive me, but i didn’t fully understand what you meant by the following: “I’m kicking around doing a weekly column regarding lesser known games”, english isnt my first language (as you well spotted out).
Do you mean that you are writing a weekly column on thee Racketboy site?
Anyway i’ll defentivley check Racketboy out, many thanks for the recommendation.
BTW: is there any gamepocalypse show coming soon? (have you exchanged the most valuable commodity for any gamepocalypse worthy game recently?)
Anyhow, thanks for everything.
Cheers!
How did you like Psychonauts, Grim Fandango and Indigo Prophecy? I hope you’ll pick up a copy of VVVVVV as well from our recommendations.
I cant belive THE Boris has answered!
I did pick up VVVVVV and i loved it, one of the games i most enjoyed on 2010, even though it has been eclipsed by Super Meat Boy, its still awsome.
Grim Fandango is one of my all time favorite games, i truly think its the best lucas arts adventure game. I was supprised at how well it still stands up today (i played it for the first time in 2009).
Ive currently started Indigo Prophecy, not got too far yet, but im already in love with the game, its making me want to get a PS3 just for Heavy Rain.
Ive have not yet played Psychonauts, it has gamepad issues on the PC, but ill get to it eventually, i like Tim Schafer very much, and given all the good things you say about the game, im already sold.
From your recommendations i also picked up Mirrors Edge, and its actually pretty good, the combat is just awful, but the rest of the game is fine, very underrated.
Sorry for the walls of text.
Again, many thanks to all for the podcast.
Take care!
Yes, THE Boris is happy to mingle.
Great that you’re enjoying all the games. I just got Mirror’s Edge myself, but I’m still waiting on a replacement PS3 before I will start it. I have no idea what I’m going to pick up next. For now I’m trucking through Super Meat Boy and Minecraft on the PC.
I absolutely loved Grim Fandango, and I still kick myself for never finishing it. I got to the very very end and then I lost my save game. I intend on re-playing it with my girlfriend some time this year.
If you’re looking for a great adventure game, you’ve got to pick up Machinarium. I talked about it a lot on this podcast, and it’s one of the three games that were vying for my GOTY. In fact, now that I think of it, it’s undoubtedly the best adventure game I’ve played since Grim, and I’d list it among the very best that I played in the 90s along with Grim Fandango and the Monkeys. And maybe DoTT. That was a great game.
Anyway, go get Machinarium.

Also, I really do think we talk about a lot of underreported games. Basically any time Brian talks you’re probably not going to have heard of it before, unless you’re pretty deep in the indie game market. =)
Should i start to get scared now that Jason is around?
I hate it when that happens! Its still worth finishing anyhow.
Incidently that happened to me half-way through Machinarium. (as you’ve deduced i already own it)
I do like indie games, and if you mention them on the podcast i give them a try. An adventure game with no dialogues, thats still engaging is to me a sign of excellence. Ill start it over.
I think ill pick up DotT, i never played it!
All of the games i mentioned except Grim Fandango and SMB, ive got because of gamecrashers, you do talk about lesser-known games and since i liked them so much i still come back and ask for more.

BTW: Once you where talking about Medal of Honor, and how they never tell the story from the loosers side perspective.
You should totally watch the movie “Der Untergang” (AKA “Downfall”). Its a VERY well made german movie about the last days of Hitler. They did not portray Hitler as a evil daemon straight from hell, instead, as a person (what he was). -Not that i symphatize at all with him or his ideology.

Ill shut up now.
Cheers!
Hey Disparanoia,
Please feel free to leave as many walls of text as you like. It’s nice to get some feedback.
Indigo Prophecy is a crazy fun game. I actually think I like it more than Heavy Rain, if only because it’s story is so strange. Sure it’s as much an interactive movie as Heavy Rain is, but Heavy Rain is so damn serious. And so bleak.
Anyway, I have to stop talking about Heavy Rain otherwise Boris will accuse me of not finishing the game…again.
I do want to see Downfall. I still, to this day, don’t understand how a movie about Hitler having a nervous breakdown while on the verge of losing WWII became a Youtube meme of gigantic proportions (I don’t think there’s a single topic that hasn’t been Der Untergang-ified).
*Head* *Hit* *Keyboard*
Good god Rob. Finish the game, then we’ll see how you liked it.
Hello to all!
Its me again!
@ Rob
I was listening to “unreal encounters” podcast, and i think that it would be a good idea to have a theme of the week or month. Instead of people sending a specific question, you could have people send you a theme to talk about (eg: unreal engine).
Just my 2 cents. I dont have a podcast of my own so its probably a stupid idea, but i thought i should let it drop.
@Disparanoia
Don’t call the idea stupid. It’s a fine idea, but we already do something like that for the Stage Select podcast. There’s a thread on VGevo where listeners post their questions and topics and we go through discussing them. If you haven’t taken a look at the Stage Select podcast yet, I highly recommend it.
Here’s the thread, so if you have any topics you want us to talk about, just go ahead and post them there:
