There’s a growing legacy of atmospheric games coming out of Russia and the Ukraine; all uniquely Slavic and all taking gameplay chances that most Western studios wouldn’t dare. Joining the ranks of Metro 2033, and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and Penumbra games is Action Form’s Cryostasis, a psychological and survival horror game where cold is your greatest enemy.
There’s quite a few remakes and reboots coming out of E3 this year, and one of the more surprising ones is the reappearance of X-COM as a first person shooter. Many fans have cried foul at the abandonment of the series’ staple turn-based strategy style, but what’s changed in the new version isn’t going to mean much to people who haven’t played the original. Here is a badass game about an apocalyptic scale outbreak starting in NYC, a character whose ability stems from the very catastrophe he’s trying to defeat, and the military forces who are simultaneously trying to fight back the infection as well as you. What could go wrong? A lot apparently.
I always feel sorry when a game gets an average review. An average review means a game was fun for some and crap for others. Now how do I know where I fall? How do I know which “average” titles will fit my personal interests well enough so that I can forgive some of the smaller flaws and still come away satisfied?
