While I know its a sore topic for most, the Yakuza games have never been huge sellers in the States. The sales for the first two games were so poor, in fact, that when the Examiner asked Sega America about the US release date for Yakuza 3 back in June, they’re answer was quite succinct: never. So how is it this game is finally getting a US release? Frankly, I don’t have a clue. As the teaser trailer clearly shows, an American release of the game is currently scheduled for March 2010. If I had to take a guess, I’d say Sega is using the three strike rule: “One didn’t sell, two did worse…and we’re still making more of ‘em!” So, if you like this series on any level, get out there and buy a copy in March. Go tell some friends about it. Spread the word. Otherwise this might be the last Yakuza title we see…ever!
For video game enthusiasts, there is no more frustrating word in the English language than the word “delayed”. And holy smokes have we heard that word used a lot this year. Since E3 no less than thirteen games have seen their release dates go by the wayside. One game, Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon 4, has been pushed back until 2011! And there are rumors that the delays aren’t over yet. So what’s the upside to all these delays? Well, you won’t have to blow a hole in your wallet to keep up with the holiday release schedule. And while I hate waiting, too, ‘delayed’ is a whole lot better than ‘canceled’. Here’s a current list of games that have been delayed: Splinter Cell: Conviction – Ubisoft – 1Q 2010 Red Steel 2 – Ubisoft – March 2010 I Am Alive – Ubisoft – April 2010 Ghost Recon 4 – Ubisoft – March 2011 Bioshock 2 – 2k Games – 1Q 2010 Bayonetta – SEGA – Jan 2010 Max Payne 3 – Rockstar – Fiscal 2010 Red Dead Redemption – Rockstar – Fiscal 2010 Singularity – Activision – 1Q 2010 Heavy Rain – SCEA – 2010 Splatterhouse – NamcoBandai – Early 2010 Tiberium – Electronic Arts – Fiscal 2010 Mafia II – Take-Two – Fiscal 2010 And, to put your mind at ease, some games that are still coming out this year (fingers crossed): Halo 3: ODST, Assassin’s Creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, Uncharted 2, Borderlands, New Super Mario Brothers Wii, Brutal Legends, The Saboteur, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Ratchet & Clank, Left 4 Dead 2, Scribblenauts.
While I have no problem with companies marketing their wares, I feel like Square-Enix is just rubbing it in with this one. First off, the game isn’t even finished yet. It has not been released. And no one even knows when the heck localization for the US/EU copy is going to commence. Oh and there’s that little issue of having to port it to the 360, because someone in Japan thinks that 360 users suddenly care about RPGS (or final fantasy games for that matter). So I see this [awesome] poster being put up in LA and I can’t help but feel a tinge of annoyance. It would help if I could fool myself into believing that there’s any chance this game is going to come out early Q1 or Q2 2010. That, maybe, something will be announced at E3 to confirm that this game is actually going to be released eventually and be worth waiting all this time for. But, being the constant pessimist I am, I’m convinced that this title will not see the light of day in the states until Q4 2010…because Squeenix likes to torture us Yanks. So thanks, for nothing Square (ok I still love you…even though you kill my inner child).
