Although it’s been a while since I played CroTEAM’s Doom-inspired shooter “Serious Sam” back on the PC, I can say, pretty definitively, that shooters are just not made like this anymore. Released at a time when Half-Life was redefining what a FPS could be, CroTEAM did a hardcore 180, effectively saying “screw that”, and created a wonderful throwback to a time when psychotic, headless creatures with bombs for arms and massive guns with endless amounts of ammo were more important that silly things like story or motivation. In fact, the game play couldn’t have been more skull-numbingly simple: grab some big-ass guns, shoot down any ugly that gets between you and an open space, and repeat until the credits roll. Hilarity ensues. Now, CroTEAM is bring the crazy back with an HD version of the original Serious Sam game. In classic Serious Sam form, the infomercial for the game is as nonsensical and tongue-in-cheek as the game it’s promoting. While we’re quite afraid to find out what a “krundle” is, we’re sure you’ll get a kick out of this video. Serious Sam HD is being developed for PC and Xbox Live Arcade. A US release date has yet to be announced.
Although marred by a severe case of slide-show-itis due it’s extreme system requirements, Crysis one was undoubtedly one of the best shooters to come our way since the heady days of Half-Life. Sure, the story wasn’t amazing. But the combat was like nothing most of us had ever experienced in a shooter before. “You mean I get a nanosuit that can make me invisible? You mean I can punch a guy across the map? Holy crap I can stop bullets with my mind?” Okay, not all of that is true. But the nanosuit did play a huge part in what made that game a total blast to play. Would you boost your strength and rush a guy, grab him, and throw him into his unsuspecting buddies? Would you take the stealth option and hide behind cover until you could catch your foe unawares. Or would you up your resistance and go in guns blazing? The choice was yours. Now comes the best news yet: Crytek has built a new suit, and they want you to test it out! Announced at this years E3, it seems unlikely that we’ll see actual gameplay footage from Crysis 2 for quite some time. And with no release date given at GamesCom, or likely to be given at PAX, TGS, or any other 2009 convention, we’ll just have to wait and see what Crytek has in store for us come 2010. As for me, I’m just dying to get my hands on the Nanotech v2. Guess I’ll just have to hope that old adage “all good things come to those who wait” rings true. *sigh* Related Posts:CryEngine3 Beauty Trailer – is it ever!Red ‘Glitch’ RedemptionRage – The QuakeCon 2009 TrailerE3 Month comes to a closeGameCrashers Radio Ep.32 – Unreal Encounters

I’ll be perfectly frank: I’m really starting to get burned out on real-life inspired FPS. It has nothing to do with the quality of the games (or lack there of) or the story (ditto) or even the multiplayer modes (double ditto). It has a lot more to do with the fact that almost any shooter inspired by real world weapons, wars, battles, and so on, pales in comparison to the hell that war really is. If you can respawn or heal over time, your game is no more realistic than the Halo series. The only difference is now you’re placing other ethnic groups, other cultures, and other beliefs in your cross hairs. It’s highly possible a few people might not take too kindly to that. In any case, the latest trailer for Modern Warfare 2 (compliments of gamevideos.1up.com) looks really good. The video is less than HD quality, so things don’t look quite as pristine as they will in the final game. But it’s nice to see some in engine segments of what, I assume, is the single player part of the game. While I played my fair share of the first game (single and multiplayer) I’m not entirely convinced how this game is going to make me feel any less burned out on shooters than I already do. And, if I had to guess, I would assume that Infinity Ward is not going to deviate too far from what they’ve already perfected from the first game. It’s way too early for Infinity Ward to try and reinvent the wheel on COD (though the axing of the COD moniker from the title completely is an interesting move, seeing as it’s an easy way to identify the title). Will people go for the title based on “Modern Warfare” alone? Probably. But, to this gamer, I’m far more excited about the insane, sci-fi inspired shoot-em up action of Red Faction: Guerrilla than I am for Modern Warfare. It’s just starting to become way to “real” for my video gaming tastes. source: GameVideos.com Related Posts:PS3 Slim – It’s real because Kaz Hirai said soRed Faction Guerrilla – Demons of the Badlands DLCPAX Writer Interview – Dragon Age 2Modern Warfare 2 – Yet another damn good trailerModern Warfare 2 Launch Trailer get Eminem’d
