In a move that seems like it was all too inevitable, Blizzard has decided it’s next expansion to the WoW universe, named ‘Cataclysm’, will take us back to where our perilous journey began: Azeroth. However, things have changed in Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. While we were up in Northrend fighting The Lich King, all hell broke loose back home. Deathwing, a giant, immortal fire dragon from Warcraft II has resurfaced with a tremendous fury. And his unexpected return has torn the lands of Azeroth asunder, splitting the Barrens in half and decimating Alliance and Horde strongholds alike. The world has changed beyond anyone’s worst nightmares. And new alliances will need to be forged in order to combat this new foe. What does this mean for the long-term, seasoned, wow-veteran? Simply thus, expect everything to change! It’s been apparent for a while now that Azeroth has sorely needed an “Extreme Makeover.” Not only does Azeroth, as it stands today, look dated, but everyone has played the 1-60 level content so much that it’s become routine. Once a player reaches the Outlands and Northrend no one is really interested in going back to the original lands. That’s where Cataclysm comes in. Cataclysm is going to rewrite the book on everything that a new player will experience in Azeroth. In addition, it will make high level players want to return to Azeroth to participate in new, high level content. Gone are the quest lines and zone progressions that any wow player worth his or her salt has memorized front, backwards, and sideways. Cataclysm will offer a player hundreds of new quests, new raids and dungeons, new zones, new monsters, and, for the first time ever, flying mounts in the entirety of Azeroth. You will be able to use your flying mount wherever you want, whenever you want, however you want. It just doesn’t get better than that. But that’s not all. As an incentive to start a few more ‘lowbie toons’, Blizzard is adding two new races to the mix: the ‘lycanesque’ Worgen (alliance) and the mischievous Goblins (horde). Each race gets a new starting town, Gilneas and the Lost Isles respectively, as well as unique racial traits. As for the current races, they’re all getting new class combos that will allow them to play in roles never available to them before. So don’t be surprised to see a Tauren Paladin and a Dwarf Shaman rolling around Azeroth post-launch. But why listen to me when you can get all the information on Cataclysm you’d ever want directly from lion’s mouth? Here’s what the developers had to say about Cataclysm during the panel at this years Blizzcon.
While I have no problem with companies marketing their wares, I feel like Square-Enix is just rubbing it in with this one. First off, the game isn’t even finished yet. It has not been released. And no one even knows when the heck localization for the US/EU copy is going to commence. Oh and there’s that little issue of having to port it to the 360, because someone in Japan thinks that 360 users suddenly care about RPGS (or final fantasy games for that matter). So I see this [awesome] poster being put up in LA and I can’t help but feel a tinge of annoyance. It would help if I could fool myself into believing that there’s any chance this game is going to come out early Q1 or Q2 2010. That, maybe, something will be announced at E3 to confirm that this game is actually going to be released eventually and be worth waiting all this time for. But, being the constant pessimist I am, I’m convinced that this title will not see the light of day in the states until Q4 2010…because Squeenix likes to torture us Yanks. So thanks, for nothing Square (ok I still love you…even though you kill my inner child).
