While there have been many space combat games released over the course of video game history, Tie Fighter has the distinction of being one of the last space combat games I really got wrapped up in. I’ve played a bunch of the Freespace and Wing Commander games, to be sure. But something always felt off about them. If you’ve ever watched an episode of Babylon 5, you know what I mean. Combat in space is nothing like combat in the skies. And you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand why: gravity is not a factor in space. You’re not forced to keep moving forward simply because it’s the action keeping you in the sky. And yet, most space combat games, even Tie Fighter, insist on utilizing this flawed game mechanic because it’s something that’s very easy to overlook. Well, there is finally a game that addresses this age old problem in space combat games. Numachia, an independent title being developed by a three-person team over at AureaSection, is a space combat game that splices elements of Descent’s 360-degree movement model into its combat. As you can see in the video above, you’re more than welcome to fly head first into a gigantic capitol ship and see if you last longer than 20 seconds. At the same time you have maneuvering thrusters that allow you to use the lack of gravity to your advantage, permitting you to strafe, backup, quick turn, and invert at will. The result is as enticing as it is dizzying. Though a multiplay game at its core, the dev team has discussed the possibility of adding a single player campaign sometime after it’s initial release. As for when the game will light up your computer screens, the Numachia website lists late 2009 as their intended release window. However, it seems a little unlikely at this point with only a few weeks left in the year. They also mention that the core game will be free, but that certain parts of the game will be inaccessible until the user purchases a license for the game, which is only fair. The final price tag has not yet been announced. And if you were wondering ‘what’s the deal with the name?’, the dev team has a simple answer for you: “Because it fits the game perfectly.” Related Posts:VIDEO: Dead Space 2 is going to f*ck with your mind (and maybe your guts as well)Doom: The Rogue LikeGratuity Reigns Supreme in ‘Gratuitous Space Battles’NEXT: Dejobaan Games President and AaaaaAAaaa!!
Have you had a graphics card go south on you recently? Were you shocked to find your warranty just ran out? Do you feel uninspired to go out and drop $200 on a new component for your desktop computer? Well so did Icrontic blogger, Bobby Miller. In a story that you have to read to believe, Miller took the advice of a fellow Icrontic tech writer and did the unthinkable: he took his expensive piece of computer equipment and shoved it in your every day oven at a preheated temperature of 385 degrees fahrenheit. Now before you check out the result of his little experiment, allow me to stress the obvious. While he explains in great detail why something like this can, actually, save a video card from the brink of death, it is by no means a guarantee. You’re just as likely to burn out the card completely as you are to cause the soldering to “magically repair” itself. So I would strongly recommend trying any other options open to you before cooking your graphics card like a Thanksgiving turkey. With that in mind, read on to find out what happened.
So you’ve played non-stop since the game launched. You’ve partied with everyone on your friends list, and beyond. You’ve killed 40,000 skags, 15,000 brutes, and every single boss. You’ve even located the mythical vault and cleaned up the mess afterward. So what’s next on the agenda? ZOMBIES! Yup. The undead are at it again and they’re going to give all of us a run for our money…and hopefully drop some killer loot for us along the way. While $10 dollars isn’t an unreasonable amount of money for 6 hours of content, it is annoying to hear that, once again, the PC crowd is going to have to wait a bit longer to see what the console boys and girls get first dibs at. And if you’re wondering when Gearbox is planning on patching the PC version, you’re not the only one out there. Even though a patch was recently released for the Xbox360 and PS3, Gearbox has not yet stated when players will be getting that. More content is never a bad thing, but when players can’t connect to each other in a game that was created with co-op in mind, that doesn’t make a whole heck of a lot of sense. Here’s hoping the PC version gets a patch soon.
As you probably guessed, the PC community has not been very pleased with the recent turn of events regarding Infinity Wards upcoming FPS Modern Warfare 2. Shortly after the announcement that the PC version of the game would not ship with dedicated server support, a few people began an online petition in the hopes that IW and Activision would reconsider their decision. As of today, that petition has over 100k signatures (including yours truly) and is still going up. It’s even been signed by members of the press. As this number continues to climb it’s going to get harder and harder for Infinity Ward to ignore a gaming community that feels, more then ever, like it’s been shafted in comparison to their console counterparts. And can you blame them? They’re being charged the same as console gamers (because Activision can), but getting a product that doesn’t warrant the $10 bump. This just feels wrong coming from a company that made a name for itself on the PC. Update: Robert Bowling, the man who made the original announcement, recently responded to the online petition with this statement: “Definitely made a big wave, and the response will not be ignored. I’ll ensure everyone at IW sees the petitions and responses to it. Despite the less than reassuring words, only time (and sales numbers) will tell if Infinity Ward is going to make any real changes to its online system. Update: Over at FourZeroTwo, Robert posted his full length response to the controversy surrounding this issue. Unfortunately, his description of what IWNET will bring sounds more and more like an admission that they want the PC experience to be EXACTLY the same as the console experience. If I had to take a guess, this decision comes from so far up the corporate ladder that not even the wrath of god will prevent the PC multiplayer system from being a horrifying shadow of what most PC gamers are used to.
When Crytek released Crysis back in 2007, everyone was mightily impressed by what the CryEngine could do, when it wasn’t melting peoples cpus. Now, Crytek has released it’s third iteration of that engine and has gone to great lengths to make it more powerful, easier to use, and compatible with current consoles and future proofed for PC. If there’s one thing that really excites me, it’s the fact that the sandbox interface has been refined so much that even I, a person with no level designing skills to speak of, feel inclined to jump in and try it out.
Although marred by a severe case of slide-show-itis due it’s extreme system requirements, Crysis one was undoubtedly one of the best shooters to come our way since the heady days of Half-Life. Sure, the story wasn’t amazing. But the combat was like nothing most of us had ever experienced in a shooter before. “You mean I get a nanosuit that can make me invisible? You mean I can punch a guy across the map? Holy crap I can stop bullets with my mind?” Okay, not all of that is true. But the nanosuit did play a huge part in what made that game a total blast to play. Would you boost your strength and rush a guy, grab him, and throw him into his unsuspecting buddies? Would you take the stealth option and hide behind cover until you could catch your foe unawares. Or would you up your resistance and go in guns blazing? The choice was yours. Now comes the best news yet: Crytek has built a new suit, and they want you to test it out! Announced at this years E3, it seems unlikely that we’ll see actual gameplay footage from Crysis 2 for quite some time. And with no release date given at GamesCom, or likely to be given at PAX, TGS, or any other 2009 convention, we’ll just have to wait and see what Crytek has in store for us come 2010. As for me, I’m just dying to get my hands on the Nanotech v2. Guess I’ll just have to hope that old adage “all good things come to those who wait” rings true. *sigh* Related Posts:CryEngine3 Beauty Trailer – is it ever!Red ‘Glitch’ RedemptionRage – The QuakeCon 2009 TrailerE3 Month comes to a closeGameCrashers Radio Ep.32 – Unreal Encounters

What kind of crazy talk is this? Well, if you haven’t heard anything about this game, don’t go kicking yourself. Although it did remarkably well at E3, winning a best downloadable award from Gamespot, the game has had a tough time grabbing the attention of the gaming public. And with so many games coming out this year (and in 2010) it really isn’t that shocking, especially when PSN/XBL titles like Fat Princess, PJ Shooter and Shadow Complex, respectively, steal the limelight from everything else else. But Trine is a game we all should be taking a closer look at. Call it the thinking man’s Castle Crashers (if you need a crude reference point). Trine is a co-op game consisting of three different Medieval/Norse archetypes with different, but necessary, skills. In order to get through each level, your group will be required to combine their abilities in order to traverse the environment and defeat the world’s foes. This may not sound so revolutionary on its own. But if you take a look at the video below, you’ll notice that Trine is a game that’s banking on it’s unique design, both in graphics and gameplay. I wouldn’t call it 2009′s ‘Braid’ (I’m not convinced Trine has much to offer in the way of a story), but I do think it will offer an experience that most games coming out this year wish they could call ‘innovative’ or ‘original’. And now there is a demo available for the PC (PSN doesn’t get the love just yet.) According to Neoseeker.com: “The demo brings you the tutorial menu as well as the game’s first level; it’s timed of course — you should be able to get 30 to 40 minutes of playtime per session.” Trine is currently scheduled to be released on July 3rd for the PC and July 2009 for PSN.
